Elizabeth D. Scheibel
Northwestern District Attorney

Elizabeth D. Scheibel is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and Western New England College School of Law. Following law school, Betsy worked for eight years in the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office. During her tenure in Hampden County, much of her case load involved the prosecution of child sexual assault cases. In May 1993, Betsy became the District Attorney for the Northwestern District. Betsy is the first woman district attorney in the history of the Commonwealth. As District Attorney, Betsy emphasizes the prosecution of crimes against vulnerable victims and has created community education and outreach programs for these populations, particularly in the areas of domestic violence, juvenile justice, consumer protection and abuse committed against children, elders and persons with disabilities.

Betsy was an appointed member of the Medicolegal Commission, which provides oversight of the medicolegal system in Massachusetts and the Governor’s Commission on Mental Retardation which examines the commission’s program of services, designed to address the needs of individuals with mental retardation. District Attorney Scheibel is Chairperson of the Building Partnerships for the Protection of Persons with Disabilities Steering Committee, which coordinates statewide efforts between law enforcement, adult protective services and human service agencies to address abuse, neglect and crimes committed against persons with disabilities. In addition, she serves as the State Director of the National District Attorney’s Association.

District Attorney Scheibel is a two-time past president of the Massachusetts District Attorneys Association, past Co-Chair of the Law Enforcement Education and Training Subcommittee of the Governor’s Commission on Criminal Justice Innovation, and was a ten-year member of the Massachusetts Victim Assistance Board.
